If Morticia Addams drinks a cup of hot chocolate before she goes to bed, then I bet it’s a lot like this one, though I dread to think what the source of her charcoal would be! My charcoal is food grade and you can get some here.
Now then, time for a disclaimer. Activated charcoal is a powerful detoxifying agent – it binds to substances in your body and flushes them out. For this reason it’s wise to check with your doctor if you’re taking medication and to avoid taking meds or supplements for two hours either side of using charcoal in a recipe. Otherwise you’ll lose the good stuff. We all know that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing so even though some people safely eat/drink activated charcoal products quite regularly, I personally don’t use it more frequently than twice a month.
Charcoal doesn’t really taste of anything but it does add a texture. If you’ve ever used charcoal toothpaste then you’ll recognise it well! You might imagine that drinking this hot chocolate would be like necking a cup of water from the bottom of a barbecue, but no – the finished drink is a smooth, rich tasting and full of magic.
You Will Need Â
20oml of your preferred milk
1.5 tablespoons of milk choc chips
2 teaspoons cacao powder
1/2 – 1 teaspoon activated charcoal
A drop of vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Optional extras
Edible glitter and stars
Red rose petals
Method
- Add all of the ingredients to a pan
- Whisk over a low heat until all of the chocolate chips are melted and the powdered ingredients are well combined with the milk
- Increase the heat but don’t allow the milk to boil
- Once the drink is hot enough, pour into your favourite cup
- Float a couple of skull marshmallows on top
- Dust with glitter and stars to make a really special starry night effect
- Sprinkle with rose petals for a truly Morticia-esque beverage
So what do you think? Will you give this drink-noir a chance to become your favourite spooky treat?
